You can get upgrades in two ways:
Upgrade List:
Rapid Fire: Your shooting speed increases with each upgrade.
Multi-Shot: You fire an extra projectile with each upgrade.
Wider Projectile: Your projectiles are wider and hit more easily.
Explosion Shot: Your projectiles explode on impact, damaging nearby blocks.
